St Mark’s Basilica
Home to the relics of Saint Mark, the Basilica is now a symbol of Venice and recognised around the world. It was created in 820 AD by the Venetians and consecrated in 832 AD. A serious fire in the 900’s sadly meant it lost its original form. The Basilica we see today was created in 1063 AD after being commissioned by Doge Domenico Contarini and his successors.
Pala D’Oro
The Pala D’Oro stands behind the main alter and is the only example left in the world of intact and considerably sized Gothic goldsmithing. the Byzantine enamel which measures 3.34 meters in width and 2.12 meters in height is in split into two main parts, the upper and lower. The alter is decorated with over 1900 precious stones and gems.
St. Mark’s Museum
