Interesting Facts About The Royal Palace of Madrid
- The Royal Palace of Madrid is built on an old Moorish Alcazar fortress having been commissioned by Philip V in the 18th century.
- A fire then destroyed the palace in 1734 forcing King Felipe V to commission a new one which then took 17 years to build!
- The palace is home to priceless works of art from masters including Caravaggio, Juan de Flandes, Velazquez with incredible frescos by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, Corrado Giaquinto and Anton Raphael Mengs.
- One of the amazing features in the palace is the Grand Staircase and its actually made of a single piece of marble from San Agustin.
