King David I of Scotland originally founded it as a monastery in the 12th century but converted to a royal residence in the 16th century. The palace of the location of the murder of David Rizzio, who was the private secretary of Mary, Queen of Scots, in 1566.

The Palace of Holyroodhouse starts at the end of the Royal Mile and is the official home to His Majesty the King in Scotland and has been a royal residence for over 500 years now.
