- Access to Herculaneum
Explore Herculaneum, the ancient Roman town that was devastated yet preserved by the Mount Vesuvius eruption in 79AD.
Herculaneum was a wealthy town with an arena, a Palestra and a massive statue of Hercules. Until one day with Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79AD. Pompeii, sitting down wind of the volcano eruption was quickly buried in ash. Herculaneum, which was upwind of the volcano, got destroyed just under a day later when it was effectively paused in time as it got covered by a 400 degrees celsius volcanic ash cloud and all that goes with it. The ash coated the town and ‘helped’ to preserve it to as it is today. It is truly a marvel and very understandable why it receives so many visitors each year.
