Capuchin Crypt Fun Facts

  1. The church that sits on top was built in 1620 by the Capuchin Cardinal, Antonio Barberini
  2. Its suggested the soil used in the crypt was actually brought over from Jerusalem under the orders of Urban VIII, the pope at the time.
  3. When they opened the crypt, the monks transferred bones to it to remind them that death could happen at any time.
  4. The coat of arms is made from mummified arms
