When was the Museum formed?
The Museum was founded in 1974 and has occupied the basement of the Old Council Hall in Market Street since 1992.
Who runs the Museum and how is it funded?
The Salcombe Museum Society is a registered charity (no. 268909) and is run entirely by volunteers. All our stewards volunteer their time and receive no pay, and all our funds come from the modest admission fees and membership subscriptions and from private donations. The only exceptions to this are the occasional grants we receive from public bodies to improve our displays and conserve our collections.
Do think about supporting us by joining the Museum Society. As a member you will receive free entry during opening hours as well as other benefits. Learn more about membership by going to the Support Us page.
Can school and youth group visits be arranged?
Schools and official groups of young people are welcome to contact the Museum to arrange visits to suit their interests. Visits can be tailored to specific Key Stage requirements. To arrange your visit please email the Museum.
Is photography allowed?
Photography is not normally permitted in the Museum, though requests may be made in advance by email request.
Are there any access restrictions?
The Museum is on one floor at ground level and is accessible by visitors in wheelchairs (don?t be put off by our basement address)! There are no toilet facilities but public toilets are available in nearby Whitestrand Car Park.
