Shakespeare’s Globe is a world-renowned performing arts centre. Given it’s history, its also a cultural attraction and education centre. Shakespeare’s Globe is home to the Globe Theatre and Sam Wanamaker Playhouse.
It was founded by the actor and director, Wanamaker and built around 230 metres away from the site of the original theatre. The Shakespeare’s Globe was opened to the public in 1997 with a production of Henry V. This Sam Wanamaker Playhouse is a smaller space which is based on the indoor playhouses of Jacobean London.
The Sackler Studios is an educational and rehearsal studio and is located just around the corner from the main site. There is also an exhibit about Shakespeare’s life and work.

Interesting Facts About Shakespeare’s Globe
- The current Globe was completed in 1997 and is the third to be built with the original having been destroyed by a fire in 1613, but that one was located one street further back.
- Given its history and link to the original, they tried to design the current one as closely as possible to the original one even down to the type of wood used during the construction.
- Shakespeare himself was also said to be part owner of the original theatre, and even mentioned it in some of his works.
- The theatre has a flagpole and it’s said that you could identify what play was being performed by the flag being flown!
- Apparently the original was designed to be similar to the Colosseum in Rome!
- During a performance in 1613 the theatre caught fire and burnt to the ground due to small live cannons that were used during the play and the thatched roof caught fire!
