What’s Included

  • Access to Herculaneum

Explore Herculaneum, the ancient Roman town that was devastated yet preserved by the Mount Vesuvius eruption in 79AD.

Herculaneum was a wealthy town with an arena, a Palestra and a massive statue of Hercules. Until one day with Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79AD. Pompeii, sitting down wind of the volcano eruption was quickly buried in ash. Herculaneum, which was upwind of the volcano, got destroyed just under a day later when it was effectively paused in time as it got covered by a 400 degrees celsius volcanic ash cloud and all that goes with it. The ash coated the town and ‘helped’ to preserve it to as it is today. It is truly a marvel and very understandable why it receives so many visitors each year.

Why not upgrade to one of our great combination tickets. For Herculaneum we offer:

Herculaneum Fun Facts

  1. Herculaneum was hit by a volcano eruption in 79AD and was effectively frozen in time due to the ash cloud that hit it preserving many objects allowing us to see them today
  2. Whereas Pompeii was downwind and destroyed immediately, its suggested that Herculaneum was upwind and it wasn’t covered by the ash of the cloud until at least a day after the volcano erupted.
  3. Herculaneum is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.
