The Archbasilica of St. John Lateran, where you can view the sacred stairs that Jesus walked upon. Restored in the 1700’s, the building has been beautifully decorated in multiple styles. With huge mosaics showing biblical scenes along with marble statues, a gothic alter and Renaissance artwork on show. You may have to enter the building through the central bronze door as ‘The Holy Door’ is only opened once every 25 years by the Pope, however the central bronze door was once used in the Senate hall in the Roman Forum, so also has significant history to it. This is the Pope’s Cathedral, so an incredibly special place and understandible why it is such a popular attraction. The larger than life status of Jesus and various other saints also let you know this is a special place. As you enter your jaws may drop as you take in the ganduer and beauty of it. Don’t forget to look up to see the ceilings and the gold-leaf work. The ceilings also has the coats of arms that belong to Popes Pius IV & Pius V. One of the most important aspects of the Cathedral though as the Sacred Steps, the steps that Jesus actually climbed during the Passion and were moved to Rome centuries ago. Whether you are a believer or not, this place is quite extraordinary.
